Shares of travel and hospitality names with heavy northern exposure could feel the chill long before the skies actually clear. But the same solar physics cuts both ways. A quieter Sun means fewer geomagnetic storms, and that is welcome news for utilities and satellite operators. Every major solar event carries risk: induced currents that fry transformers, radiation that degrades GPS and communications. The famous 2022 storm that knocked out 40 Starlink satellites was a reminder of how fragile orbital infrastructure can be. A sleepy Sun is a safer Sun for the power grid and for insurers who write space-weather policies. The irony is that the best aurora nights often happen during the ramp-down, not the peak. That is when the Sun's magnetic field is tangled and unstable, producing the kind of shocks that create spectacular, unpredictable displays. So the next two winters may still deliver unforgettable skies, just with less reliability. Chasing the aurora has always been a gamble. Now the odds are shifting. There is a longer-term twist. Some researchers argue the Sun may be entering a broader decline in activity, part of a century-scale pattern that has produced past "grand minima" like the Maunder Minimum in the 1600s, when auroras were rare and Europe shivered through a little ice age. That is a controversial claim, and most scientists say the evidence is not yet strong enough to call it. But it is a reminder that our star is not a constant. It breathes, and we live inside its exhale. For now, the practical advice is simple. If you have been putting off that trip to see the northern lights, the window is narrowing. Book for the next two seasons, not 2032. The aurora has always been a story about timing, and timing is everything in markets too. A dimmer sky is a warning to anyone who built a business on the assumption that the Sun will keep performing on schedule.
