Just last month, NASA announced budget cuts that would ground the Mars Sample Return mission—the ambitious plan to bring rocks back to Earth for study. Now the rover that collected some of those samples is offline. The Perseverance rover, still active in a different crater, has been caching tubes of rock for a future mission that may never launch. The whole Mars program feels like it's running on fumes. But here's the thing about Curiosity that gets lost in the coverage: it was never supposed to last this long. NASA's original plan was a two-year mission. Two years. That's it. The rover's plutonium power supply was expected to degrade. The wheels were expected to wear out. The electronics were expected to fail. Instead, Curiosity kept going. It outlived its own landing site. It outlived some of the scientists who designed it. It outlived the public's attention span, which is probably the most impressive feat of all. There's a lesson here that has nothing to do with Mars.
