If it gets canceled — and there's serious talk of that — Curiosity's entire legacy becomes a very expensive "maybe."
So when you see the next breathless headline about organic molecules on Mars, read it carefully. The rover is doing exactly what it was designed to do: keep working, keep drilling, keep finding chemistry that could have supported life. That's genuinely impressive. It's also not the same as finding life. And the difference matters, because the public is paying for this, and the public deserves to know that the most exciting thing about Curiosity might just be that it's still alive.
The rover will keep rolling until its plutonium runs too low to keep the heaters on. When it finally goes quiet, we'll have a decade of data and a stack of unanswered questions. That's not failure. But it's not the triumph the headlines keep promising, either.
