Is League of Legends Down Right Now? What to Check First
Persona #2 · Vol: 2000
It's 9 p.m. You finally have a free hour. You queue up for a ranked match, hit accept, and... nothing. The client spins. The reconnect button taunts you. Before you rage-uninstall, take a breath. Here's how to figure out whether League of Legends is actually down or if it's just you.
**Check the Official Server Status First**
Riot Games maintains a server status page at status.riotgames.com. This is the single most reliable source. If there's an active outage, you'll see a yellow or red banner naming the affected region — NA, EUW, KR, and so on. Riot usually posts within minutes of a major issue, so if the page is green and you're still stuck, the problem is likely on your end.
**The Usual Suspects When It's Not Riot**
Most "League is down" panics turn out to be one of four things:
1. **Your internet is wobbling.** Run a quick speed test. If your ping is spiking or packets are dropping, the game will feel dead even when the servers are fine.
2. **The client is bugged.** The League client is famously fussy. Close it completely through Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows), then relaunch. This fixes an embarrassing number of "outages."
3. **A patch just dropped.** Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are prime patch windows. During updates, matchmaking can be disabled for hours. Check the client's news tab.
4. **Your region is having a rough day.** Some regions — looking at you, NA — have more frequent routing issues than others. A quick search on X or the League subreddit will show hundreds of players complaining if it's widespread.
**How to Tell If It's a Real Outage**
Head to Downdetector and search "League of Legends." A sudden spike in reports — hundreds or thousands within minutes — almost always means a genuine outage. A slow trickle of reports is just normal daily grumbling. Cross-check with the official Riot status page and you'll have your answer in under two minutes.
**What to Do While You Wait**
If the servers are genuinely down, don't sit there refreshing. Riot rarely gives exact restoration times, and outages can last anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours. Use the downtime instead of fighting it. Knock out a chore, stretch, or finally start that show you've been putting off.
If you were in a ranked game when the servers died, don't worry about the loss — Riot typically enables "loss forgiveness" during confirmed outages, and ranked queues are often disabled entirely until things stabilize. Your LP should be safe.
**The Bottom Line**
"Is League down" is one of the most-searched phrases on any given Tuesday night, and most of the time, the answer is yes — briefly. But a solid chunk of those searches end with someone realizing their router needed a reboot. Check Riot's status page, check Downdetector, then check your own setup. In that order.
**Our Take**
Server outages are frustrating, but they're also a forced break most of us secretly need. If League is down, treat it as the universe doing you a favor — go outside, call a friend, or just go to bed on time for once. The Rift will still be there tomorrow, and so will the trolls in your ranked games.
