SpaceX has experimented with tiered pricing, regional discounts, and a $200 hardware promotion in some areas. The company also offers a $50-a-month "Roam" plan with slower speeds. But critics note that prices have crept upward since launch, and data caps, once unheard of, now apply during peak hours.
There's also the question of the night sky. Astronomers have raised alarms about satellite streaks photobombing telescope images. SpaceX has responded with darker coatings and sunshades, but the debate over orbital congestion is far from settled.
Competition is coming. Amazon's Project Kuiper plans to launch thousands of its own satellites. OneWeb, now merged with Eutelsat, is targeting enterprise and government customers. China is building its own megaconstellation. Low Earth orbit, once empty, is becoming a crowded neighborhood.
For now, though, Starlink holds a commanding lead. And its impact goes beyond streaming movies. Rural hospitals use it for telemedicine. Volunteer fire departments use it for dispatch. Farmers use it to run GPS-guided tractors and soil sensors. In disaster zones, Starlink terminals have become as essential as generators.
The service isn't without frustration. Customer support is largely automated. Speeds vary by location and time of day. And in some oversubscribed areas, new customers sit on waiting lists for months. But for millions of Americans who spent years on the wrong side of the digital divide, a white dish on a pole has become a symbol of something rare: a tech promise that actually arrived.
