Starlink Is Quietly Rewiring Who Controls the Internet

The pitch sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel: a constellation of thousands of small satellites circling the planet, beaming high-speed internet to anyone with a clear view of the sky. No cables. No cell towers. Just a pizza-box-sized dish and a monthly bill.
That's Starlink, the satellite internet service built by SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket company. It now claims more than 5 million customers across roughly 100 countries. It has been credited with keeping Ukrainian forces online during the war with Russia, connecting remote hospitals, and giving rural American families something faster than the dial-up-grade DSL they've suffered with for years.
That's the story Starlink wants you to hear. The real story is messier, and it matters more than a satellite dish.
Start with who benefits. SpaceX owns the rockets that launch the satellites, the satellites themselves, and the ground stations that talk to them. It is, in effect, the entire supply chain. That vertical integration is why Starlink can undercut rivals on price and speed. It's also why the company has enormous leverage over a service that many users now treat as essential infrastructure. When you own the road, the toll booth, and the only car on it, "competition" becomes a polite fiction.
Then there's the sky itself. Astronomers have been howling for years about Starlink satellites photobombing telescope images. SpaceX has tried dimming the satellites, with mixed results. The bigger concern is congestion. Low Earth orbit is a shared resource, like the radio spectrum or the ocean. Right now, it's governed by a patchwork of national regulators and international bodies with roughly the enforcement power of a homeowners association. SpaceX has launched more satellites than every other operator combined. If something goes wrong up there, the cleanup crew is, well, SpaceX.
The Pentagon has noticed. Starlink has become a de facto military asset, providing communications in conflict zones. In 2023, Musk reportedly declined to extend coverage for a Ukrainian attack on Russian forces in Crimea, raising the uncomfortable question of whether a single billionaire should hold a kill switch over a war. The U.S. government has since started hedging, testing alternatives and signing contracts with competitors. That's not a vote of confidence.
For rural Americans, the calculus is genuinely complicated. Starlink can be a lifeline where fiber will never reach. But it's not cheap: hardware runs around $349, plus $120 a month for residential service. That's more than many urban broadband plans, and speeds can dip during peak hours. The company has also been accused of quietly throttling heavy users and changing terms of service after the sale.
None of this means Starlink is a scam. It's a real product solving a real problem, and it does things no cable company can. But "connecting the unconnected" is a marketing line, not a governance model. The company has repeatedly clashed with regulators, faced antitrust questions, and expanded into markets where it can set terms without much pushback.
The uncomfortable truth is that the internet is increasingly a physical thing—satellites, cables, data centers—and whoever owns the physical layer owns the conversation. For decades, that was a mix of telecom giants and governments. Now a private rocket company is elbowing its way into that club, and the rules haven't caught up.
So enjoy the fast downloads in the middle of nowhere. Just remember who's holding the antenna.
