Let's think about it.
Start with the money. SpaceX builds the rockets, owns the satellites, and launches them at cost—roughly $15 million to $30 million per batch of Starlink satellites on a reused Falcon 9. No competitor on the planet can match that vertical integration. OneWeb went bankrupt. Amazon's Kuiper is years behind. So the United States has effectively outsourced a chunk of its communications infrastructure to a single unregulated-by-treaty CEO who also runs the launch business for NASA, the Space Force, and most of the commercial space industry. That's not a conspiracy. It's just a concentration of power we've never seen before in orbit.
Now the part nobody advertises. Starlink's consumer service is fast in rural Montana and mediocre in downtown Seattle, where it competes with cable it can't beat on price. The real growth isn't households—it's governments. Ukraine's military runs on Starlink terminals. The Pentagon buys Starlink for operations. Taiwan is reportedly exploring it. When a service becomes militarily essential, its owner becomes a de facto foreign policy actor. Elon Musk has already restricted Starlink access during a Ukrainian offensive, a decision that reportedly alarmed U.S. officials. Ask yourself who benefits when one man can flip a switch on a battlefield.
Then there's the debris problem. Low Earth orbit is getting crowded. Starlink satellites do deorbit and burn up, and SpaceX has gotten better about it, but astronomers are furious—streaks of light ruining telescope images—and rival operators complain about near-misses. The FAA and FCC regulate launches and spectrum, not orbital traffic. There's still no binding international framework for who cleans up what. We're treating the sky like a frontier because it's profitable to do so.
And the competition? China is launching its own megaconstellations, Qianfan and Guowang, at a pace that should worry anyone who thinks orbit is a neutral space. The likely future isn't one Starlink. It's two or three, each tied to a superpower, each with kill-switch potential. That's not connectivity. That's infrastructure as leverage.
None of this means Starlink is a scam. For a farmer in Nebraska or a disaster zone after a hurricane, it's a lifeline, and the engineering is legitimately impressive. But the story we're sold—plucky startup democratizes internet—buries the real story: a private company is building the most consequential communications network since the undersea cable, with almost no public accountability, and we're cheering because the download speeds are good.
The honest summary: Starlink solved a real problem and created a bigger one. The question isn't whether it works. It's who gets to decide when it doesn't, and why we handed that decision to one company.
